For those who want to become hairdressers where to begin with how to cut hair is often an issue. There’s a few things a potential hairstylist should know before they begin cutting hair. Cutting hair can be an art form, and every artist needs a nice clean canvas. If hair is greasy or dirty the first step would be washing it. This is also helpful for the second step which is to get the hair wet. Wet hair is much easier to cut than dry hair. Make sure to comb through the hair well to remove any knots or tangles. It is a good idea to keep a spray bottle near to wet the hair if it become dry while styling.

A hairdresser’s tools are her most important assets. Investing in a nice pair of scissors made exclusively for cutting hair is how to cut hair better. While someone can find a decent pair of scissors at the drug store fairly cheap, keep in mind that cheap scissors dull easier and dull scissors will give a dull cut. It is important to never use the scissors for anything besides cutting hair which can wear down the edge. Other tools to stock up on for cutting hair would include combs, electric hair clipper, razors, hair clips, and a blow-dryer. All the tools that come in contact with the hair or skin should be sterilized before use as to not cause infection.

The next step would be to section the hair off with hair clips; generally eight sections with four sections on the top layer and four on the bottom works well. Whatever hairstyle is being cut, the most important rule is to cut only a little at a time. More can always be cut off later, but not much can be done if it’s cut too short. The easiest cut for beginners would be an all over one length cut. For this cut start at the section closest to the nape of the neck. Release it from the clip and comb through the section. Grab a piece of the freed section about an inch thick and run a comb through it. Before releasing the comb grab the section between your index and middle fingers about 1/4 inch from the end. Start cutting off 1/8 inch pieces of hair until the desired length is reached. Once that piece of the section is done release it. Then comb a piece of the already cut hair into a new inch-sized piece of hair grabbing it 1/4 of an inch from the bottom. Using the cut pieces as a reference cut the rest of the combed section the release it. Continue this until the entire section is the same length. To start a new section, release a new section adjacent to an already cut section and use the cut hair as a reference. Repeat this for the rest of the sections of hair until the whole head is even and that is how to cut hair well.
